EAST TURKESTAN: Who are the Uyghurs and where’s their country?

Most people have heard of Tibet–and are somewhat familiar with the Tibetan cause–but this is not typically the case when it comes to East Turkestan, despite the striking similarities between the two. Among others, East Turkestan (or “Xinjiang,” as the Chinese now call it) is home to the Uyghurs. But who are they, and why don’t they have their own country?
